Full description:

We'll climb steeply out of Castleton to walk along the southern edge of Winnats Pass, where with luck we'll get a good view of the evening sun lighting up the opposite side of the gorge. We continue on to Mam Tor, and depending on how much daylight we have, we'll continue to Back Tor or Lose Hill to watch the sun set, before returning to Castleton.

The path above Winnats Pass is rough and steep, so please wear good walking boots. Because this walk will take most of the evening, we'll try to have a short break for food. It's also possible we'll finish in the dark, especially if we watch the sun set from Lose Hill, so bring a head torch.

Public transport or car sharing options:

Buses are infrequent in the evening, so most people will be best going by car. Please arrange lift shares in the Meetup comments, and arrive promptly so we can make the most of the daylight. It looks like Peak Cavern is the cheapest place I can be sure of parking, because they have a flat rate of £3 after 17:00, while the visitor centre charges full price (and the toilets will be closed). You may find parking on the road towards Treak Cliff Cavern, but this is also paid and I can’t find evening prices online.

Alternatively, the 272 bus leaves Sheffield at 16:36 arrives Castleton 17:52, and there's a return bus at 22:26 arriving 23:29. The walk start is at the far end of the village from the bus station.
