Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join SWG?
You’re welcome to trial three walks with us before deciding whether you want to join SWG – if you do, you’ll need to become a member of the Ramblers, which is our parent organisation. In the second section of the form, under the heading ‘Your group’, choose the South Yorks and N.E. Derbyshire area and then Sheffield 20s & 30s as your group.
What can I expect from my first time out with the group?
We’re a relaxed and friendly bunch, promise! The pace may vary from walk to walk, but rest assured we won’t leave you behind. We’re a diverse group: being based in “The Outdoor City” means that many of our members are experienced local hikers, but we also have a wonderful mix of ages, experience levels and backgrounds. There’s always someone interesting to talk to.
How much does Ramblers membership cost?
It’s best to check directly on the Ramblers website as prices may change, but it’s probably less than the cost of one takeaway coffee per month. Membership can be individual or joint, and concessionary rates are available for those who meet certain criteria.
Are the age limits strict?
SWG is aimed at walkers in their twenties and thirties, but age is just a number! The “20s & 30s” bit just gives you a steer on the fun-loving, adventure-having nature of the group. We have some members who are younger and some who are 39+ (who’ve made so many friends in the group they don’t want to leave). However, most new members are in their 20’s or 30’s. If you are already 40+ and looking to join Ramblers for the first time, you may find joining one of the other Sheffield groups more suitable for you.
Can I go on other Ramblers walks?
Absolutely, we thoroughly recommend you do. By signing up to the Ramblers Association, you can join guided walks across the country and not just SWG walks. Next time you’re holidaying in the UK, why not look up the nearest Ramblers-affiliated group for a hike in the local countryside?
Can I bring a dog on a walk?
Walk descriptions state whether the walk is suitable for dogs - this is at the discretion of the walk leader. Please read the description of the walk carefully to ensure the walk and terrain is suitable for your dog.. We recommend that dogs are kept on a short lead as fellow walkers may be nervous of or allergic to dogs. Please observe any signage about livestock or wildlife whilst on the walk. If fellow walkers raise concerns or if the walk leader feels the dog is proving detrimental to the walk, dog walkers may be asked to leave.
Can I bring a child on a walk?
Members who are parents and/or guardians may bring their own children on walks, subject to the walk leader's judgement about the suitability of the walk, and the safety and enjoyment of all participants.
If you would like to bring your child on one of our walks, please contact the walk leader as soon as practicably possible. Walk leaders and members who are parents / guardians of children on our walks must read Ramblers safeguarding guidance and policy before the walk.
Key points from Ramblers guidance are:
1. Children and young people under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who holds parental responsibility, such as a parent, legal guardian, carer, teacher or youth worker. Ramblers volunteers cannot provide direct care and supervision to people under 18.
2. We are no longer able to accept unaccompanied young people aged 15-17 on Ramblers activities, even with written consent from a parent or guardian. The consent cards which we previously issued for this purpose are no longer valid.
How do I know if my walk has been cancelled?
We use Meetup for booking places on walks. Ensure you have the appropriate notification settings switched on and you will be notified of any changes or cancellations. Depending on your settings, you may also be notified by email if an event has been cancelled.
How will I recognise the group?
The walk leader will provide an exact meeting point and their mobile number may be in the walk description on the website so you’ll be able to contact them on arrival if you struggle to find them. You can also use the comments section on Meetup, but please be aware that not every meeting place has sufficient signal. The best thing to do is arrive in plenty of time for the walk!
