Full description:
We will begin this members-only walk with dinner at The Yorkshire Bridge Inn.
During this night hike we will explore the hills, moors, and edges around Ladybower, Derwent, and Howden Reservoirs. We will stop to enjoy the sunset, night sky, and sunrise, including for a midnight snack. We will also experience the difference walking at night makes to this environment, the wildlife, and take in the peacefulness of our surroundings.
The exact route is to be confirmed depending on the weather and capabilities of the group with the following providing an idea of the route plan. Before dusk we will depart The Yorkshire Bridge Inn, cross the Ladybower Dam, and steeply ascend Win Hill in time to watch the sunset over the Hope Valley. After darkness we will continue our walk descending Win Hill towards Hope Cross and then cross the Snake Road. Next we will climb through Haggtor and Woodcock Coppice before making our way to Alport Castles. From here we will descend and circumnavigate the northern side of Howden Reservoir before climbing again to High Stones and Howden Moor. We will then continue to Back Tor where we will watch the sunrise before making our way along Derwent Edge and back to The Yorkshire Bridge Inn for breakfast at 08:00.
As a night hike, expect this to be much more challenging than the usual walks. This walk will be strenuous due to both the length, significant elevation gain, and constant undulation throughout. It will require a good level of fitness. The terrain will include very steep and rocky climbs and descents. There are also sections of peat bogs along the route, and potentially other wet and muddy areas depending on the weather. Sections of the route will be along edges and hence exposed to potential windy conditions with a lower temperature than in the valley. Sturdy walking boots are highly recommended.
A torch is mandatory and you will not be able to take part without this. We recommend a head torch, whilst phone torches are not appropriate. You should also bring spare batteries or a spare torch.
Please be aware that whilst it may be warm during the day temperatures can drop significantly at night. Warm layers are therefore essential. We will be walking all night covering a significant distance. Please therefore bring plenty of food and drink, including a meal to have as a midnight snack.
