Weekend Away: Dunsop Bridge

  • Smelt Mill Outdoor Centre Trough Road Clitheroe, England, BB7 3BH United Kingdom (map)

It’s time to head to a nearby area we don’t usually go to: Forest of Bowland. This National Landscape is located southwest of the Yorkshire Dales, east from Blackpool. There are some good hills, and we’re staying right in the middle of them!

  • Booking opens: Monday 4th May

  • Price: TBD

  • Places available: 28

  • Can I bring my dog? TBD

The bunkhouse where we’re staying can be found outside of Dunsop Bridge village. It’s owned by Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team. There are plenty of trails to explore and summits to hike up. On the Saturday, it would be possible to do a linear walking by taking bus 11 to another town. There are also easier walk options along the streams that run between the hills.

Weekends Away are only open to Ramblers members. You will need to arrange your own transport, although the group will try to put people in touch to arrange lift shares. Sadly, there is no viable public transport route to Dunsop Bridge. The nearest large train stations are Lancaster and Preston, from where it’s a 15-mile walk or bike ride to the bunkhouse. From Clitheroe station, it’s 12 miles. Please note that bus 11 does not run on Sundays.

We have exclusive use of the bunkhouse from 16:00 on Friday, but you are welcome to arrive at any time after that. Some people like to travel early to make the most of the day, while others prefer to travel after work. The finish time will depend on how long any walks on Sunday take before returning home. We probably have to check out of the bunkhouse before 10:00.
