Full description: Night Walk! Taking the opportunity to get up onto Derwent Edge and (weather depending) view the Perseid Meteor shower. A few days past the peak, there’s still a rate of 50 meteors per hour and the moon is dark and waning, giving ideal view conditions. It’s a great experience to spend part of the night out on one of the great Peak District moors. With it being a night walk please read the full description and consider if it is within your capabilities before signing up. There is the option to meet at the pub beforehand for a drink and to discuss the walk.
The route is on the trail by the side of the Ladybower reservoir plus rough, rocky and flagstone moorland paths. There are considerable steep accents and descents. We will be stopping regularly to view the sky so it will get chilly.
Essential Kit: Not having any of this at the start means you will not be allowed to come on the walk.
Head torch with spare batteries, or enough power to last at least 7 hours (no hand held or phone torches as this runs your battery down and increases the likelihood it will be dropped).
Spare light, ideally a second head torch but a secondary torch of some description as a back up.
Warm, windproof and or waterproof layers - these need to be suitable to keep you warm when not moving as it will be cold at night even in summer. If rain forecast waterproofs are essential.
Food and drink to keep you going for 7 hours.
Suitable footwear with good tread for walking on the moors, for example walking boots.
Rucksack to keep all your kit in.
Charged phone for communication in the event of an incident.
You can also consider bringing a battery pack and cables.
Public transport or car sharing options: Due to the early finish in the morning, car transport is the only realistic way to access this walk. The first train back from Bamford station is at 6:35 on Saturday morning.
Please park considerately (not near houses to avoid disturbing local residences). Pay and display car parks generally do not allow overnight parking. I plan to park in the pub car park while getting a drink then moving the car to the layby on the A57 just to the east of Bridge over Ladybower https://maps.app.goo.gl/27Yi4JwW8zavF1Pt6
