In between 2 ‘regular’ Weekends Away, we have added a local overnight stay in Hurdlow, which is located in between Buxton and Bakewell, near Monyash. The plan is to meet in Bakewell on the Saturday morning and walk to Hurdlow as a group. We will have a pub meal at the Royal Oak (optional) and sleep in the pub’s bunk barn. After breakfast at the pub (again, optional) on Sunday, we aim to walk to Buxton, from where everyone can take a train or bus to get home. This is still a draft plan: we could change the days around, depending on the routes that walk leaders suggest.
Booking opens: Monday 29th December
Price: £25
Places available: 12
From Bakewell, we could walk south via Lathkill Dale or north past Magpie Mine. Between Hurdlow and Buxton, there are a whole row of Ethels waiting to be bagged: High Wheeldon, Parkhouse Hill, Chrome Hill, Hollins Hill, High Edge and Grin Low. Another option would be to pass through Deep Dale nature reserve. Either way, it’s promising to be two days of beautiful walks in our beloved Peak District.
Weekends Away are only open to Ramblers members. You will need to arrange your own transport, although the group will try to help you navigate the public transport options. There are several buses between Sheffield and Bakewell. The trains to and from Buxton require a change in Stockport. However, there is currently no viable public transport option to Hurdlow or nearby Monyash.
We have access to all of the 4 bunk barn rooms from 14:00 on Saturday. The finish time will depend on how long any walks on Sunday take before returning home. If we end up walking to Buxton on Sunday, we will aim to catch the 16:55 train. We have to check out of the bunk barn before 11:00.
