For our very first Weekend Away in 2026, we’re returning to the North York Moors! Helmsley is located on the southern end of the Moors, just north of the Howardian Hills. There are some castle and abbey ruins nearby, as well as historic estates and most importantly: great walking opportunities. Both hills and rivers dot the landscape, so there will be plenty to explore.
Booking opens: Monday 29th December
Price: £50
Places available: 28
Helmsley is a market town with a castle and historic town centre. Surrounded by hills to the north, south and west, it is a good starting point for walks. Easier options include the Duncombe Park River Trail and following the old railway line through the valley towards Pickering. More challenging routes could include trig points such as Roppa Edge, Rudland and Pike Hill further north. The Cleveland Way National Trail also starts from Helmsley.
Weekends Away are only open to Ramblers members. You will need to arrange your own transport, although the group will try to put people in touch to arrange lift shares. It’s also possible to take the X31 bus from York or cycle the old railway line after taking the train to Pickering.
We have exclusive use of the bunkhouse from 16:00 on Friday, but you are welcome to arrive at any time after that. Some people like to travel early to make the most of the day, while others prefer to travel after work. The finish time will depend on how long any walks on Sunday take before returning home. We have to check out of the bunkhouse before 10:00.
