Full description: This is a strenuous walk which includes lots of ascent/descent on rough and boggy terrain over exposed Peak District edges, and is about 20km long. Legend says that the Wooden Curlew only reveals itself to those with tired legs in their time of greatest need...

The walk will start from Heatherdene Car park, where a public toilet is available. The 257 bus runs to Heatherdene every hour, arriving at about 9.35am.

We will make our way up a steep hill through the woods onto Bamford edge, then up onto Stanage briefly. From this we will drop down through some boggy moorland and woods to Cutthroat Bridge. Crossing the busy/fast A57, we will make our way up onto Derwent edge and along it until we near Dovestone Tor. We will then turn left off the edge following a steep descent until we reach an inviting barn to rest in. From here, it is a more gentle walk along the reservoir front then back along the road to Heatherdene. We will hopefully make it back for 16:00-16:30, in time for the 16:45bus.

There are no refreshment stops en-route, please bring enough food (lunch and lots of snacks) and water (minimum 2L, ideally more), though there is a pub at the end opposite Heatherdene. The walk will be at a decent pace to finish in daylight and in time for the return bus. It will be late October so has potential to be cold and wet, please bring a coat, waterproof trousers, hat and gloves, and enough layers to stay warm.

Public transport or car sharing options: The 257 bus arrives at Heatherdene at 9.34am. In terms of getting back, the 257b departs from Heatherdene at 15.50 and 16.45. Or, it is possible to walk further into Bamford for the train (but this adds a couple of miles). There is a big car park at Heatherdene.

Be prepared: Please remember to dress appropriately for the time of year, with enough layers, sun protection if required, a waterproof, as well as food and water. Further information on what to bring can be found on our website here: https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/be-prepared

Sign-up: Sign-up for this walk opens 5 days before the event. If you sign up and can no longer make it, please be respectful of others and remove yourself from the event so that others can take your place. We request you do this ***NO LATER THAN 6pm*** the night before the walk.
