Full description:
Starting at Edale Station we will walk towards the village centre turning right to cross Grinds Brook towards Ollerton Farm continuing along the path to Nether Booth. Next we will follow Lady Booth Brook past YHA Edale Activity Centre and steeply ascend Kinder Scout. Next we will circumnavigate the Edale side of the Kinder plateau via Ringing Roger, Grindslow Knoll, Crowden Tower, Wool Packs, Kinder Low Trig Point, Edale Rocks, and Swine’s Back. We will then head to Brown Knoll, Toot Hill, Lord’s Seat, and along Rushup Edge. After dropping down and crossing the col we will climb Mam Tor and then traverse the Great Ridge to Hollins Cross. Next are the climbs of Back Tor and Loose Hill before descending into Hope to finish at the pub at The Old Hall Hotel for food & drink.
This walk will be strenuous due to both the length and significant elevation gain. It will also be fast-paced requiring a good level of fitness. The terrain will include very steep climbs, continual ascents and descents throughout over rocky paths, as well as crossing fields and possible bogs. Much of the route will be along edges and ridgelines and hence exposed to potential windy conditions with a lower temperature than in the valley. Sturdy walking boots are recommended.
We advise that this is not suitable as a first walk with SWG without prior experience of walking long distances at speed over such terrain.
Public transport or car sharing options:
Outbound train departing Sheffield at 09:14 and arriving at Edale Railway Station at 09:46. Return train options depart Hope (Derbyshire) Railway Station at: 18:39 or 19:39, with a journey time of 27 minutes.
Public transport is strongly encouraged for this walk due to the limited parking in Edale and Hope which fills up quickly on weekends. For those who prefer to drive, please try to car share and allow plenty of time to find a parking space.
