Be Prepared

Your go-to guide to ensure you have everything you need to join one of our walks

Make the most of your walk

Hiking is always more fun if you’re prepared for the trails ahead and for what might happen during your adventure. We’ve drawn on our experience to come up with some suggestions that we hope will ensure your hikes are as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

What to Pack

Food & Drink

Depending on the terrain, we usually cover about 2-2.5 miles an hour so bear this in mind when you’re preparing the food and water you’ll bring along. If in doubt, always bring a little extra! The best advice we can give you before you join your first walk is be prepared.

Clothes

The weather in the Peak District can be very different to that in Sheffield and it’s generally quite changeable, so it’s a good idea to bring an extra layer and a waterproof. From spring through to autumn, you’ll probably need some sun protection too (sunglasses, hat, sun cream). We strongly advise against wearing jeans as they can be cold and impractical, not to mention uncomfortable if it rains.

Shoes

Apart from being well fed, hydrated and protected from the elements, you’ll also need suitable footwear. Most SWG members wear either trail shoes or hiking boots. Canvas trainers or flip flops might look good, but they’re seldom appropriate on the paths and rocks or when you’re trampling across a moor.
