Photos on the SWG website

We need your photos!

The new SWG website is full of photos, and we want to add more! To send in your photos, upload them as normal using the upload photos form. If you say you're happy for us to do this (which is the default), the best photos will go on the website. Remember, though, that most photos will not go on the website - they need to fit the shape available and be a good showcase of the group.

If you're thinking of taking photos specifically for the website, this is what we're looking for:

Homepage

These photos are the first thing many people will see, so we want something eye-catching. The photos should look like a particular season, so snow or bare trees in winter, orange trees in autumn, rain in summer, and so on. The pictures must have people in them, and must be outdoors: the general theme is friendly looking people that look like they're enjoying themselves in nice countryside. Multiple people in the photo is even better.

The photo has an aspect ratio of 3:2, which is the ratio used by many SLR cameras. It's also close to the ratio used by compact cameras (usually 4:3), so most photos will be suitable for cropping to this shape. The top 90 pixels must be plain and pale-coloured so the text can appear on top of it, and the bottom 35 pixels will have a white panel over it with the place the photo was taken, who took it and when.

Other pages

The internal pages use a different shape of banner, and the short/wide format doesn't work with a lot of photos. The dimensions are 766x258 pixels, or approximately 3:1. The top third of the photo needs to be plain enough for the text to be readable, especially towards the left.

These are a few of the different banners in use on the site, along with an example of the photos we're thinking of. If you have another kind of photo you think would work, or you want to submit a photo for another section of the site, by all means send it in!

  • Walks: Photos of people walking. Like on the homepage they should look like they're enjoying themselves, and photos in the Peak District or around Sheffield are best because this is where we have most of our walks.
  • Walk leading: People leading the group, checking a map, and so on.
  • Socials: Well, socials of course! Be aware, though, that photos taken with an on-camera flash tend not to look good enough for this sort of thing, so maybe this is one to leave until spring!
  • Weekends: Any photos taken on weekends away that are obviously not the Peak District - so mountains, the sea, and so on.

In general

Remember that we can only use a few photos on the website, and most photos won't fit the space available - especially on the internal pages. The option on the form just confirms that you're happy for us to go ahead and use the photos on the website as well as uploading them to Flickr. If you leave an email address, we'll let you know if we put one of your photos on the website. Photos on the homepage are credited, and once internal photos get going I'll include a list of where they are and who took them on this page. We want to keep the photos up to date, so older photos will be removed in favour of new ones where possible.

Although we want photos with people in them, remember that a plain group photo usually looks a bit dull for people who weren't there - so try some different ideas.
