A Local Walk round Local Parks for Local People

Start: Open in map app SK350845, Meersbrook Park Road, Meersbrook

Walk Leader: Kate W

Backmarker: Volunteer on day

Start/end point: The lower entrance to Meersbrook Park (corner of Brook Rd/Meersbrook Park Rd)

If driving, there is free parking available on local residential streets. If using public transport, the 20 to Hemsworth bus leaves Arundel Gate, Sheffield City Centre at 10.03, arriving at Chesterfield Road/Beeton Road (a few mins' walk away) at 10.13

We start by walking up through Meersbrook Park, then pass through local woodland to get to Graves Park. We’ll do a loop around Graves Park and the adjoining Cobnar Wood. There’s potential for a snack/cake stop at the Rose Garden Café before we head down via Carr Wood and back into Meersbrook Park.

Please note the first third of this walk is mostly uphill, but, in accordance with the laws of physics, we shall go up but come back down again (with the opportunity to take in some magnificent views of Sheffield as we do so).

Sheffield round walk

Start: Open in map app SK332858, Ecclesall Road, Endcliffe

Walk Leader: Ben G

Backmarker: Volunteer on day

Show map

This circular walk takes you on a tour of the parks, countryside, woods, waterways and villages surrounding the Yorkshire city of Sheffield. The walk is signposted and runs for about 14 miles so can be completed in a day.

You can start the walk from any number of places but this route starts from the lovely Endcliffe Park in the Sharrow Vale area of the city. You enter the park at Hunters Bar and then follow the pretty Porter Brook through woodland to Bingham Park at the western end. You continue along the brook through Bingham Park and Whiteley Woods passing Endcliffe Park and Forge Dam on the way.

After emerging from the woods you head through the lovely countryside of the Mayfield Valley along Clough Lane. This leads to the peaceful wooded area of Porter Clough where you turn south to the little village of Ringinglow on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

After passing through the village you then head through the pretty Limb Valley with the Limb Brook and nice woodland trails to enjoy on this section.
The next stage takes you through one of the real highlights in Whirlow Brook Park. Here you'll find Rhododendrons, Azaleas, woodland, surfaced footpaths, gorgeous gardens and a rock pool with a waterfall.

After leaving the park you continue south east through Ecclesall Woods where you'll pass the delightful Abbeydale Miniature railway.

You continue towards Beauchief Abbey passing through Ladies Spring Wood on the way. The Limb Brook runs through this area of ancient woodland with a variety of birds to look out for. These include nuthatch, the green woodpecker, the great spotted woodpecker and the lesser spotted woodpecker. Beauchief Park includes the remains of the 12th century Beauchief Abbey, a 17th century church and a pretty mill pond.

The route continues east to Meadow Head and Graves Park. The park is a mixture of open parkland and woodland, with several streams and three lakes. There is also an animal farm with many rare breeds of cattle, pigs, chickens and donkeys.

After Graves park you turn north through Lees Hall golf club and Meersbrook Park. The final section takes you through Chelsea Park and Brincliffe before finishing back at Endcliffe Park.

Let's explore more of what’s on the edge of this great city by walking the Sheffield Country walk.  Over the next few months I’ll try and complete the 53 miles and would love some good company.  As each walk is liner it’s perfect for using public transport. This walk is liner and does NOT finish where it starts!

Walk Details:

Part 1 - Eckington to Totley 11 miles, approx. 5 hours.

Meeting Point: Outside Eckington Co-Op at 10:20

Finishing Point: Totley Approx: 15:30

This section is mostly undulating footpaths heading west through Eckington Park and then woodland in the Moss Valley before crossing farmland towards Totley.  I haven’t done this section before so it will be a bit of an adventure for us all.

Please bring food, drink and waterproof clothing.

Getting there:  The number 50 bus leaves Sheffield Interchange (Stand B5) at 09:46 arriving at Eckington Bus Station at 10:15

Getting home: Bus numbers 97 and 98 run every 15 minutes from Totley back to Sheffield City Centre and on to Hillsborough.  (30min journey time).

Ticket:  A Citybus Day ticket costs £4.70 from the driver and will get you travel on both the bus to Eckington and back from Totley.  Be sure to get the Citywide one as this covers both bus companies.  This ticket will also cover any other bus you use in Sheffield that day.

This first of a series of walks I am doing to convince you to buy a tunnel, by showing how hard it is to walk over. We will start in Edale and follow the valley up to the tunnel portal near Barber Booth from here we will head cross country towards the other end stopping to view the air shafts on the way. I will then realise this is meant to be a nice walk and head back to edla via South head, and kinder low with some nice views both sides and finish near the Old Nags Head for whatever refreshments are permitted.

This is actually part of a sponsored activity month for work's internal charity Golder Trust for Orphans you will be helping out just by keeping me company.

This walk provides stunning views of both the Edale and Hope valleys. We’ll then back track along the ridge to Hollins Cross, and make our way back down to Edale.

Derwent Edge - Back Tor circular loop

Start: Open in map app SK205865, Lady Bower Inn

Walk Leader: Rachel G

Backmarker: Volunteer on day

Show map

We start next to the Lady Bower Inn with a short but very steep climb up onto the edge. It's worth the effort for the views over Lady Bower! We will then walk along the edge via White Tor, Dovestone Tor, Back Tor and Lost Lad before winding our way back down to the reservoir. We will follow the water until we are back at the Lady Bower Inn.

There is parking at Heatherdene £3 all day

There is a bus available but please note the times of departure - 273 bus leaves Sheffield Interchange at 9:00am and arrives at the Lady Bower Inn around 9.25. For returning the bus leaves either from Fairholmes (which will shorten your walk by about 3 miles) or the Lady Bower Inn. This might involve some hanging around as the buses are not very frequent but it's a nice place to kill an hour or so! (Depending on the size and ability of the group we will probably miss the bus at 1pm and the next bus is around 4pm - please ensure you are happy with this before committing to come on the bus).

It is suggested to bring the following:
- Lunch
- Plenty of water (the walk will probably take around 4 hours)
- Suitable footwear. The terrain is rocky in places, generally paved but if it has rained could be muddy/boggy in places).
- A waterproof and layers. The edge is very exposed so it's likely to be windy and cooler than you might be expecting and the weather is very changeable.

The views on the walk are spectacular, especially with the heather in full bloom at the moment, hope to see you there!

Difficulty - Medium - the climb at the start is quite steep but the walk is fairly easy going from there.

We can stop for a drink here if there is interest. Then we’ll head down, then up and then down again into Eyam where there are a few cafes, so we can stop for tea / coffee / cake. And then we head through an up and downy wood and end up in Grindleford, where we’ll make our way back to Hathersage along Derwent River, so the last few miles will be flat.

There is a train leaving from Sheffield at 10.14am, which will arrive in Hathersage for 10.32am. If you are catching the train don’t forget your facemasks.

There's a moose loose aboot this bunkhoose!  Well there will be some SWGers at least!  This August Bank Holiday we are heading north of the border to South West Scotland.  We will be staying at Newton Stewart Youth Hostel close to the Galloway Forest Park and within easy reach of the Southern Uplands.  We have sole use of the Hostel for 3 nights, so there will be plenty of time to explore the area, socialise and relax.  More details to follow.

The Loxley Watershed Walk

Start: Open in map app SK327895, Loxley New Road, Malin Bridge

Walk Leader: TBC

Backmarker: Volunteer on day

This walk encircles the entire water catchment area for the Loxley river, using paths rather than roads as much as possible. After an initial start along the Loxley river itself, we then climb up to Loxley common and Loxley Edge and follow the Sheffield country walk to High Bradfield. We then take a series of paths and head along Rocher Edge towards the Dukes Road, which we will follow all the way to Back Tor (halfway point and lunch stop). We will walk along Derwent Edge, then take a right towards Moscar and a section of quiet country lane. If there is time, we will divert slightly from the watershed to visit Our Cow Molly, for a well-deserved ice cream to keep us going for the last hour of the walk back to Malin Bridge via Storrs and Matlock Edge. Assuming the weather is clear, we should have spectacular views of the Loxley valley from all directions and beyond. If the weather is very hot or wet, the route will be shortened. Please note that given the distance this will be a fairly fast paced walk with limited stops and we are likely to be out for 10 hours in total, so please make sure that you bring plenty of food and water and suitable clothing to cover all likely eventualities.

Walk Leader: Nigel L

Backmarker: Volunteer on day

What better way to entice you on this walk than a promise of an Our Cow Molly ice-cream en-route. Although there’ll be a queue your pain will soon be forgotten as the luxuriant but delicately flavoured dairy delight envelopes those taste buds.

As for the walk, it heads westward with some sweeping views overlooking the largely tree topped Rivelin Valley taking in soft forest paths of Wyming Brook till we hot Rivelin Dams. Rising out of Rivelin Valley takes us into more open hill farmed livestock land walking along dry stone walled paths to our ice-cream stop. The return route drops down to the Loxley River following its gentle flow.

Start: Open in map app SK326912, Middlewood Tram Stop

Walk Leader: Nigel L

Backmarker: Volunteer on day

Show map

Some of the walks first section is a bit grim. I could try to romanticise it but that would be pointless. Anyway, after passing the ghostly images of Sheffield’s decaying industrial past the walk heads along Birley Edge with some sweeping hillside views, some cloaked in creeping city limits.

Our route enters an extended duration of soft woodland tracks and trails and the tree canopies of Prior Royd, Hague’s, Warncliffe, Redmires and Clough Woods. We briefly reemerge in open skies before following the tree lined banks of the River Don with its babbling, rushing and meandering waters back to Middlewood.

This 10 mile circular walk has reservoirs, edges and just the odd hill to contend with. Ideal for those enjoying a Sunday lay-in, I’ll be leaving Redmires (top reservoir) at 10am. We start by heading up the stoney track to Stanage Pole. Striding onto the edge we’ll head to the right, along the top to the Long Causeway. We then drop down to towards New Road, strolling through fields and woods before the rewarding climb to Bamford Edge. The spectacular views make this one of my favourite walks. Given the starting point, this walk maybe more suitable to those who drive or those who live Redmires side of Sheffield. I’ll be following the ‘safe’ walk guidelines set out on the ramblers website (see the link below) so there’ll be no group hugs but I can promise you an interesting bimble with a great lunch spot. Who knows, this Sunday we might even see some sunshine.

Chasing the sublime (7mins):  Wild swimming in the seas and lochs around Britain & Scotland.  Just get in there....

For the love of Mary (6mins):  97 years old and still competing in mountain running races!!  Watch this heart-warming film of humanity and this man's enduring tribute to his late wife.

Hi everyone!

It would be great if you could make our new members monthly social, at the Devonshire Cat in Sheffield City Centre, on Tuesday 7th April 2020.

This social is designed for new members, or people looking to join SWG, to be able come along and meet SWG, and ask any questions you have. Current members of SWG are ofcourse always welcome to help us welcome new members to the group.

The social is great for:

- Meeting SWG members in a relaxed atmosphere

- Breaking the ice

- Meeting people who also enjoy walking and the outdoors

- Making new friends in the city

- Being able to ask any questions that you've been meaning to ask

- Seeing what SWG is all about, and what we have on offer

The Devonshire Cat is a great space for us to meet, if you have never been before it is also a chance to check it out with other people. There is a a good bar, and plenty of food to choose from if you need to eat.

We will have posters displayed on our table, so you can find us.

we look forward to meeting you

Up To The Downfall (Scramble)

Start: Open in map app SK122854, Edale Railway Station (Platform 2)

Walk Leader: Sam D

Backmarker: Volunteer on day

So much on offer with this one! A great opportunity to see Kinder Downfall from below, plus three of the best Kinder scrambles to boot (literally)!

We take The Pennine Way to Jacob's Ladder, then scramble up The Cloughs and head along the ridge to Kinder Low. From here we contour down into Kinder Downfall ravine and scramble up to the base of the waterfall. Then it's back round and up Red Brook, onwards past Pym Chair and Woolpacks to  Crowden Clough, then a scramble back down towards Edale for a well deserved drink or drinks.

This is Grade 1 (easiest level) scrambling for more experienced walkers. Walking boots/grippy footwear essential.
