What to bring on walks / weekends
On all day walks:
- proper walking boots
- waterproof jacket
- food
- water
In summer/hot weather
- sun hat
- sunglasses
- suncream
- extra water
In winter/poor weather
- waterproof trousers
- hat + gloves
- spare warm clothing
- torch
- survival bag
- map & compass (if you have them)
- whistle (if you have one)
- first aid kit (if you have one and can use it)
On weekends away you will need to bring the same equipment as above for walks. You may also need bedding, breakfast food, evening meals etc. The weekend organiser will let you know, but possible extras include:
For the hostel
- bedding - sheet/duvet or sleeping bag
- casual clothes for evening
- food for breakfast
- food for evening meals
For walks
- survival bag (walks are likely to be in more remote areas)
Note that the weather can be rapidly changeable on high ground, so there is almost always a risk of poor weather on walks in the Peak or other hilly areas. Please ask the walk leader for advice on what clothing and provisions would be suitable for the walk, if you have any doubts. If you are not adequately prepared the walk leader reserves the right to stop you coming on the walk - the safety of the group is paramount.
WHAT NOT TO BRING ON WALKS
Please don't wear jeans: If it rains, they get cold and heavy and don't dry quickly. Similarly trainers are out of the question on almost all walks: they provide no ankle support over rocky terrain; will not keep your feet dry; and you’re likely to lose them in the mud!
