Weekends Away

The group organises weekends away to various parts of the country, with the Lake District, Snowdonia, Northumberland, Yorkshire Dales and Moors and Shropshire all places we have visited. We normally travel up on the Friday night, and typically stay in self-catered bunkhouse or hostel accommodation (often with a pub nearby).

You can expect dormitory accommodation of varying quality and numbers of bunk beds per room. We usually occupy single sex rooms with beds in rooms allocated in advance. You do need to be reasonably tolerant, but any members having concern with room sharing arrangements should contact the organiser at the time of booking.

Two or three walk options will be offered each day, but be aware in some areas such as Snowdonia and the Lakes, it is difficult to offer shorter / easier type walks. If you have any concerns about the walks that may be offered, please contact the weekend organiser in advance.

In addition to bringing your usual walking equipment with you please use your common sense about what else to bring, but here are some additional suggestions: Sleeping bag; pillow; towel; torch; food for the weekend.

Also please ensure that you've read the details of the weekend away thoroughly, since specific requirements will be mentioned there (e.g. some YHA hostels provide bedding). Sometimes kitchen space is limited, so if you plan on doing any of your own cooking (as opposed to eating at the pub), please consider bringing food pre-cooked that just needs warming up.

Weekends coming up

  24th - 26th February 2012
Rydal Hall
Set in the heart of the Lakes District this is an excellent weekend away with some great walks and scenery to be experienced however the Youth Centre is being refurbished so the accommodation is in The Bishop Bully Barn and three eco-pods which hold 2 people each.

The barn measures 14.7m x 5.8m. In addition there is a stage area and a mezzanine that leads through to a kitchen. The mezzanine could be a socialising area while those that want to go to bed earlier can sleep on the stage at the other end. Mattresses will be provided. Kitchen & toilet facilities in the barn. Showers next door in a brand new campsite block.

The cost of the weekend is £12.50 per person for staying in the barn and if you fancy a pod then it's £15 per person. First come first served. Sleeping bags will be required in the Barn. The Eco-pods are like cosy wooden tents so for the night you need to take sleeping bags and roll mats.

For Saturday's evening meal a booking has been made at the Badger Bar

Wild Camping for Beginners
Ever fancied getting away from it all, sleeping under the stars, waking up at the top of a mountain with amazing views of mist filled valleys below? Me too! That's why we're heading to the Lake District for a spot of wild camping on one of the fells. Friday night we'll stop in the YHA hostel in Ambleside. Saturday, after a late start, we'll head to the hills on a roughly 10 mile (B3) walk, finishing quite high up on one of the Lakeland fells, where we'll pitch tents, cook dinner, and watch the sun go down over the mountains. (Foul weather option: camp lower down or even in a campsite).

A certain amount of kit will be required, including tent, good sleeping bag, etc. - possibly you can borrow what you don't have - more info will be given to those expressing an interest. Priority will be given to those who have never wild camped before.
More info:

Deepdale Granary, North Norfolk coast
Come along for a jolly weekend at the coast with coastal paths, beaches, green fields and ice-cream. The area is famous for its nature and bird reserves. The village church is part of a chain of ancient churches along the coastline, with many other fascinating stately homes and historical buildings close by. We'll try to book an hour's seal watching on one of the days.

The hostel is right on the coast and very nice. Bring your own sleeping bag and towel, all other bedding is supplied. The cooking space is limited so we'll book a meal at one of the local pubs - make sure you say if you want to go for the meal or not.

SWG 10th Anniversary Weekend
The 7th of July is the 10th Anniversary of SWG's very first walk! To mark the occasion we will be camping out in Edale for the weekend.
There will be a choice of walks on the Saturday when we have invited along some of the founding group members to join us and anyone else who is not camping is welcome to come along for the day, finishing up with a celebratory drink and cake at the Rambler Inn.
For the campers, Saturday night will involve a BBQ, followed by the pub. Sunday - more walks or head back home.
We have booked Fieldhead campsite in the centre of Edale, for both Fri and Sat nights. The cost includes 2 nights camping and parking for 8 cars (please car share). If the booked places fill up, there are also other campsites in Edale. If you want to camp for the Saturday night only, then you could just turn up but space is not guaranteed. Booking Information:

Please note that SWG do not have unlimited resources to fund weekends away. As a result of this we have the following policy to both help prevent financial loss to the Group and to ensure the safety of our members:

Booking:
  • These weekends away are for full SWG members only. You will need your Ramblers’ membership number at the time of booking.
  • Members can only sign up for a weekend away when bookings open from the time and date stated in the programme and on the website.
  • PLEASE make sure that when booking a place, you speak directly to the organiser in question. Messages left do NOT mean your place is booked. You cannot expect the organiser to ring you back so if you don't get through first time, please keep trying.
  • To book you need to provide the following information: Your full name; your Ramblers’ membership number; your telephone number and your email address. You will also be expected to raise any particular concerns about the weekend that you may have.
  • You may book yourself and one other SWG member on the weekend away in one phone call, but please have all their details to hand (or they cannot be booked on).
  • A number of places will be reserved on each weekend for walk leaders offering guaranteed walks, without whom there would be no walking and therefore no weekend away. The first leader to book will have first choice of walk grade to offer, the remainder will be allocated a grading. Booking for walk leaders and committee members may begin in advance of the booking date, however a minimum of 50% of the places will still be available when the bookings open to the membership.

Payment:

  • Once you have reserved your place, you are liable for the full cost of your place on the weekend away. If for any reason you cannot go, you must inform the organiser immediately. It is your responsibility to find a replacement. Please see our Refund Policy section on the on the General Info page for further details.
  • All payments can be made by cheque (payable to "Sheffield 20s & 30s Walking Group") or by online transfer - the weekend organiser will send you details.
  • If your payment is not received 4 weeks before the weekend your place will automatically go to the first person on the reserve list. If there is no reserve list, or we are unable to reallocate your place to somebody else, then you are still liable for the full cost of the weekend away.

Thanks for your co-operation. It is vital to ensure the smooth running of all weekends away and the enjoyment of all.
