James B's Grade 1 Scramble

Having recently acquired two new books on scrambles in the Lakes, James B was keen to try out a hard death-defying scramble up Pinnacle Ridge up onto St. Sunday Crag. However, given that it is a grade 3 scramble and the the weather had been quite wet we decided it unwise.

Alternative plans were therefore made and the idea of a scramble was dropped. Assured that James' group would not be scrambling, Laura decided to come along for a nice gentle walk.

However once en-route James discovered a grade 1 scramble that we could take up Hogget Gill.

Having walked from the Cow Bridge car park along Dovedale Beck, we started our ascent up Hogget Gill. At first it seemed quite straightforward, but we soon realised that it was going to be a strenuous day out. After a great scramble up to the top of Dove Crag we then decided to follow the contours along to Priest's Hole (a cave). This proved too much for Laura so she and Paul decided to head straight back down the valley to the Brotherswater Inn.

The traverse along the contours proved to be quite death-defying due to wet slippy grass and rocks. Once we got to below the Priest's Hole Cave we had had enough (well three of us had had enough).

Jonathan went off to conquer Hart Crag then caught up with the rest of us as we ambled along the top of the ridge before finally dropping down a steep slope to the Brotherswater Inn pub.

All in all a great day out.
